Sunday Funday: Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken & Sylvan Avenue Tavern

I’ve been to Gus with my family before, but this time I made sure to pay attention to detail.

The menu is pretty simple which I like because it moves me a way when restaurants have a shit load on the menu.

I ordered a four piece tender with beans and fries for my son. The tenders were a nice size and they were really moist. They are also so fulfilling because I was full after 3. The bread is also a nice compliment to the chicken. The ranch and peppers were also a nice addition because it gave the moist tenders a nice spice.

We also tried the half chicken with the beans and Mac and cheese. The half chicken has way more flavor than the tenders. It’s a nice take on southern hot chicken. Each piece is well coated. The chicken is cooked to where it retains a lot of the juices.

Although the ranch comes with the tenders as part of that meal, it’s also a nice compliment to the bone in chicken.

The Mac and cheese is presented well but it’s not the best. I’m not sure why paprika is used as garnish.

The beans were good but kind of sweet. I don’t really like sweet when I’m not having dessert, but that’s preference.

This is definitely a meal you have to eat fresh there. I wouldn’t recommend taking it to go.

I think you should stop by and let me know your opinion.

Later that night we stopped by Sylvan Tavern.

The menu was nice and we tried the two snow cone like drinks. The snow cone aspect of it made it much more fun!

The first was Jon’s Hoodoo. It had a nice taste to it. You couldn’t taste the alcohol, but you could definitely feel it. The second was called the Decepticon. I was a little scared because it was made with a sour liquor, but it was actually really good. The Lucas around the rim is a nice balance with the sweetness of the drink.

The kitchen stays open late and the bartender told us everything on the menu was good. He did not fib!

We tried the hummus! I have already made it my duty to try the hummus at every place I go because they all taste so different.

The vegetables were so fresh and really yummy with the hummus. The pita chips were a hit because some parts are soft like bread and then you get the crunch of the chips. They say they have the best hummus in Dallas. You should try it and let me know what you think.

The trio is also a nice thing to try because you get to try three appetizers. Fried pickles, fried mozzarella, and fried raviolis were our pick. The pickled helped with soaking up the alcohol and you’re given a nice amount. The fried mozzarella was really cheesy to the point the cheese stretched from your mouth with every bite. The raviolis were good but different. I’m used to wet ones so it was definitely a different experience.
